There’s a different look to our report this month, which marks a slight shift in focus. We’ll still use this space to highlight some of the things you need to know, such as the note below about new Our Kids updates. But we’ll also use this space to highlight the broader spectrum of what we and our members are involved in, such as projects we’re working on, developments in the marketplace, and ideas that we think you’ll be interested in. Our member services manager, Urjita, will be in touch with our feature updates, and James, marketing manager, will write from time to time about upcoming Marketing Academy events and webinars. What makes a great teacher great? We asked Beth Alexander, a teacher at the Linden School who recently was honoured with a Lowell Milken Centre Fellowship, the first Canadian ever to receive one.

It’s been a year or so since Nancy Steinhauer passed me a copy of the book she co-authored with Kelly Gallagher-Mackay, Pushing the Limits: How Schools Can Prepare Our Children Today for the Challenges of Tomorrow (Doubleday). It’s one of those books that you simply can’t say enough good things about, though there’s a specific passage that I keep returning to. The authors write that:

“Great schools represent the potential for a more just society and an enriched childhood for every child. They can be engines of universal equality, foundations for strong communities, and vehicles for individual self-determination and advancement. Coming to a common understanding of what … schools can do helps to shape and raise expectations, and is a necessary step in making every school great”
