Our Kids was founded by award-winning photojournalist Andrew Stawicki. As a long-time photographer with the Toronto Star, he’s taken some images that have literally entered the national consciousness, including Leonard Cohen in his bathtub, and an image of two Mennonite children. He’s also taken iconic portraits of Alice Cooper laughing, Bobby Orr relaxing—here and here—and Mordecai Richler smoldering (which was also used on the cover of an issue of the Walrus).  When Andrew needed photos for Our Kids publications, he naturally turned to the people he knew. The images featured there over the past quarter century represent a who’s who of Canadian photography, including Peter Power, Christinne Muschi, Mike Pochwat, Dick Loek, Patti Gower, Lucas Oleniuk, Tim Fraser, Arnold Lim, Tobi Asmoucha, Stan Behal, Phill Snel, and Kevin Van Paassen. As a result, Our Kids has amassed perhaps the broadest archive of camp photos in Canada. Some of the images will be very familiar to anyone who has visited the website or the expos. There’s the girl on the bike at YMCA Belwood by Micheal Pochwhat; the boy flying off the end of the diving board at Camp Nominingue by Christinne Muschi; and the girls singing around a campfire at Glen Bernard Camp, by Andrew Stawicki himself. We’ve used the photo of two boys returning from a trip at Camp Ahmek by Patty Gower many times because, frankly, it says so much; the boys look tired, but, once they’ve had a chance to rest a bit, no doubt they’ll have a great story to tell.  Drawing on that archive, we’ve created a photo essay to help tell the camp story: The ABCs of Summer Camp. The piece will be released to thousands of families on OurKids.net and Camps.ca, through our e-newsletter to 40,000 opt-in subscribers, and via our social media community. The aim is to capture some of the magic of what camp is and what it means in the lives of the people who are involved in it. ABCs of Summer Camp
